Everton have played down concerns over Gareth Barry’s fitness, Sky Sports has reported, after the midfielder was the victim of a heavy tackle in the win over Cardiff City.

Barry was fouled by Cardiff defender Kevin Theophile-Catherine and there was a concern that even though Barry completed the 90 minutes, he would be forced to miss this Saturday’s fixture with Swansea City.

Theophile-Catherine was booked for the challenge and Everton manager Roberto Martinez revealed Barry was fortunate to escape with only superficial damage and not anything more serious.

“We've been very fortunate,” Martinez told the official Everton website. “It was a strong knock but he was caught in a position that has allowed him to recover quickly.

“It was painful and he has got stud marks but it didn't affect any joints,” the manager continued. “The ankle and the knee are in perfect condition so luckily enough on this occasion Gareth is fine and today he will train as normal.”

Barry is on a season-long loan to the Merseyside club, signing from Manchester City on the final day of the summer transfer window.

Everton took the lead through Gerard Deulofeu against the Welsh side but were pegged back by Juan Cala, only for Seamus Coleman to score in injury time to give the points to Martinez’s men.
