Tottenham must move on from derby defeat, says Townsend

Tottenham Hotspur winger Andros Townsend wants to put defeat to Arsenal out of mind against Europa League opponents Benfica, he has told the club’s official website.

Tomas Rosicky scored the only goal of the game after little more than a minute of play and despite a strong performance, Spurs couldn’t find an equaliser.

Tim Sherwood’s team are now nine points adrift of their North London rivals, who are third, with fourth-place Manchester City seven points clear having played three games fewer.

“It was a good performance but when you play your biggest rivals it’s all about results and unfortunately, we got caught in the first minute and couldn’t recover,” Townsend said.

“Everyone is disappointed but we can take positives from the game. We know it was a good team performance, we worked hard, controlled possession and had more chances. We know ultimately we lost, but we can take the positives to Benfica.”

Tottenham trail the Portuguese side 3-1 from the first leg, going down to defeat at White Hart Lane after a Luisao brace and a goal from Rodrigo. Christian Eriksen scored for the Londoners.

“We’ve nothing to lose,” Townsend added regarding the European tie. “We’re two goals behind from the home leg, so we can go there, have a go and see what happens.”
