FIFA considering Anelka ban request

FIFA are considering the FA’s application to have the ban given to Nicolas Anelka carried over wherever the striker plays next, BBC Sport has reported.

Nicolas Anelka

Anelka was banned for five games for making a quenelle gesture after scoring for West Brom against West Ham - a hand signal widely held to have anti-Semitic connotations. Albion conducted their own internal investigation into the incident and when Anelka wouldn’t accept the punishment meted out by the club, he was sacked for gross misconduct.

The 35-year-old was also fined £80,000 by the FA and claimed that he had terminated his contract with West Brom after refusing to accept their sanctions. West Brom issued a counter-claim, saying Anelka’s attempt to terminate his contract hadn’t followed the correct legal process, and duly sacked him themselves.

A FIFA spokesman confirmed the FA had made the request for Anelka’s ban to be enforced world-wide. “We are currently analysing the information and documentation at our disposal,” the spokesman added.

Anelka made 12 appearances for Albion after joining last summer, scoring twice - both against West Ham in the game that eventually led to his departure.
