Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has said that his players deserve to have reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League, having sealed their place in the last eight by beating Galatasaray on Wednesday, writes BBC Sport.

Winners in 2012, Chelsea returned to the latter stages on Tuesday with a comfortable victory. Samuel Eto’o opened the scoring after just four minutes as he fired a shot beneath the outstretched arm of goalkeeper Fernando Muslera.

Shortly before half-time, the Blues clinched the tie as Gary Cahill fired a shot high into the set after Muslera had kept out John Terry’s header.

It is now likely that Chelsea will be England’s sole representatives in the quarter-finals of either European competition, and, after they spent much of last season in the Europa League, Mourinho has praised the progress they have made in order to reach this stage.

He said: "We are a Champions League club and now we are among the best eight, the best clubs in the world. The players deserve to be there. To come from the Europa League to the quarter-finals of the Champions League is important for the club, important for the players."
