Man Utd vs Olympiakos - Match preview and team news

Wednesday 19 March 2014

Manchester United must overturn a 2-0 first leg deficit if they are to overcome Greek champions Olympiakos and reach the Champions League quarter-finals.

Old Trafford

This is perhaps the biggest game of the season so far for David Moyes, who is becoming increasingly under-fire after a series of poor performances, including in the first leg of this tie, where they were completely outplayed and offered very little going forward. The Red Devils will have belief that they can pull this off, but Moyes will know that it looks a tall order.

Any hopes of qualifying for next season’s Champions League by finishing in the Premier League’s top four were dashed on Sunday, as rivals Liverpool inflicted a chastening defeat on United, who could only muster one shot on target, despite possessing an attack consisting of Adnan Januzaj, Juan Mata, Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie.

While the champions of England have dramatically declined, the champions of Greece have continued their domestic dominance. Olympiakos, unfazed by the sale of Konstantinos Mitroglou in January, have an 18-point lead at the top of the Superleague, despite recent defeats to Panathanaikos and PAOK Solonika.

Mata is unable to play for Man Utd, having played for Chelsea during the group stage of the competition. Jonathan Evans and Chris Smalling are both absent due to injury.

Olympiakos could recall Javier Saviola to their attack, with Nigerian striker Michael Olaitan sidelined.
