The Football Association has charged Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho with improper conduct after he was sent from the dugout at Aston Villa on Saturday, BBC Sport has reported.

After Ramires had become the second Chelsea player to be sent off in the 1-0 defeat, some opposing players clashed, while both managers entered the field of play to try and break up the fracas.

Home player Gabriel Agbonlahor - having already been substituted - charged on to the pitch, but Mourinho was told to leave the dugout by referee Chris Foy.

In his post-match interviews, Mourinho insisted that he had not been given a reason as to why Foy sent him away. He said: "I don't know why I was sent off. I asked, but the referee refused to speak to me."

The 50-year-old was also careful not to criticise the Merseyside official, unwilling to risk the possibility of a touchline ban. However, his behaviour has led to an FA charge, and Mourinho has until 18:00 GMT to decide whether to appeal the ruling.
