Vieira backs Man City 'leaders' to land title
Manchester City’s Patrick Vieira believes the club’s senior players have the mental strength and experience to claim the Premier League title, ESPN has reported.
Vieira is currently in charge of the City Under-21 team and was formerly an executive at the club after retiring as a player following a stint in City’s midfield. He previously won titles in Italy and captained Arsenal to success in the Premier League, and says when he considers the players City have, he believes it is a title-winning squad.
“If you want to win the title, you need your leaders to be at their best, on and off the field,” Vieira said. “When you look at our first team, there are so many strong characters, and so many leaders.
“There are different ways of being a leader - some are leaders on the field, and some outside of it. But as a team, the way we performed at Hull was a strong message, because to get a red card after 10 minutes and still win showed we are really strong.
“It was not just about character but the way we dictated the game, controlled it, that was fantastic. That game showed a really strong message.”
City are currently fourth in the Premier League table, six points adrift of leaders Chelsea, but Manuel Pellegrini’s side have three games in hand on the London club. Should they claim all nine available points, City would have a three-point advantage.
