Sherwood sure he has Tottenham support
Tottenham Hotspur Head Coach Tim Sherwood believes the team’s showing in the Europa League second leg tie with Benfica is evidence he has the backing of the players, ESPN has reported.
Spurs drew 2-2 with the Portuguese club on the night and were unable to overturn a 3-1 first leg deficit. But Sherwood was forced to field an XI without a recognised senior centre-back as injuries and suspensions deprived him of the likes of Michael Dawson, Younes Kaboul and Jan Vertonghen. Midfielder Sandro and young left-back Zeki Fryers were instead called into the positions.
Sherwood was highly critical of the players after the first leg defeat but said in the aftermath of the second leg draw that those who doubted his methods had been proven wrong. “People speculated, didn't they?” he said. “I read a lot of things saying now you need those players on your side.
“It's evident they're on my side and the side of the club. They fight for the cause and my little rant, if you want to call it one, has done them no harm,” Sherwood added. “They have showed real character and real guts and they need to do that until the end of the season, because we've got some tough games ahead and I'm confident they will do that.”
The Europa League draw has paired Benfica with AZ Alkmaar, Basel with Valencia, Porto and Sevilla and Juventus and Lyon.
