Man Utd striker van Persie out for six weeks

Manchester United are fearing that striker Robin van Persie could be out for the rest of the season after confirming that he will miss six weeks with a knee injury, reports the Daily Telegraph.

Robin van Persie

The Dutchman picked up the injury in the closing stages of the Champions League game against Olympiakos on Wednesday, in which he scored a hat-trick to send Man Utd through to the quarter-finals of the competition with a 3-2 aggregate victory.

On Thursday, van Persie reported to the champions’ Carrington training ground on crutches and underwent initial tests, but the extent of the injury was only discovered on Friday when he was scanned a second time.

He will now miss both legs of the quarter-finals, against European champions Bayern Munich, as well as most of their remaining Premier League matches. Van Persie’s season has been severely affected by injury problems, with the 30-year having previously been out for two months with a thigh strain.

With Man Utd’s hopes of claiming a top four finish now all but over, this is undoubtedly a major setback to David Moyes’ hopes of salvaging a Europa League spot from what has been a disappointing first season at the helm at Old Trafford.
