Pulis frustrated by late Crystal Palace defeat

Crystal Palace manager Tony Pulis was left frustrated after side conceded a late winner to Newcastle United on Saturday, writes the club’s official website.

After some relentless late pressure from the hosts which saw Cheick Tiote hit the crossbar and Papiss Cisse miss several opportunities, Palace finally succumbed deep into second half stoppage time when Cisse headed past Julian Speroni from Hatem Ben Arfa’s powerful cross.

The goal came in the fourth minute of added time, despite only three extra minutes being allocated by the fourth official. This in particular disappointed Pulis, who said: "The disappointing thing is, when looking at the pictures after the game, we thought we should have had a free-kick outside their box with 20 seconds to go - and then they go down the other end and score, which is over time.

"In the first half, the referee has played, I think, a minute and 40 seconds over time and the second half, I think it's three minutes, 40 seconds when they score the goal. The fourth official said it was time when we thought their defender had handled - so from them going down the other end, I think it was 40 seconds."

The result prevented the Eagles from moving four points clear of the relegation zone, but Pulis was pleased with his side’s battling performance.

He added: "I think we created some good chances. We had good opportunities in the first half and in the first 15 minutes of the second half. You know when you come to a club like Newcastle they are going to create chances and you are going to have to defend but we did that when needed and it is difficult to leave here with nothing to show for our efforts."
