Moyes thrilled by Rooney opener as Man Utd win

Manchester United manager David Moyes has hailed the performance of Wayne Rooney, and the spectacular nature of his opening goal, as the Red Devils won 2-0 at West Ham United on Saturday.

Rooney scored both for a Man Utd side without the injured Robin van Persie. The first came in amazing fashion as the 28-year-old brushed off the challenge of James Tomkins before unleashing volley from just inside the West Ham half which sailed over goalkeeper Adrian before bouncing into the roof of net.

The second came in slightly more fortuitous circumstances as Rooney was on hand to turn home Mark Noble’s attempted clearance from close range, after a swift counter-attack from the visitors, who then held on comfortably throughout the second half.

And Moyes was delighted by Rooney’s showing, comparing his first goal to David Beckham’s strike at Wimbledon in 1996. He told Sky Sports: "I wanted it to go straight in and I didn't know if it was going to bounce under the bar or over the bar.

"Thankfully though it did go in. It was a brilliant goal, superb technique and in Wayne we have a player who is capable of doing all those sorts of things on a football pitch.

"It was like Beckham's goal for sure. Wayne tries it, that's the thing. They are saying in the dressing room he's tried that 20 times and it's never worked, but it did today. Such great awareness. I think how clean Beckham hit it but I think for Wayne to take it on the volley along with his timing, it's a great goal."
