Tottenham vs Southampton - Premier League preview and team news

Sunday 23 March 2014

Injury-ravaged Tottenham will be hoping to win for the first time in five games when Southampton make the trip to North London on Saturday.

Spurs had most of the play against rivals Arsenal last time out in the Premier League, but lacked the necessary quality to break down the Gunners defence, once Tomas Rosicky had opened the scoring. They did, however, emerge with some credit from the second leg of their Europa League tie with Benfica. Playing with no central defenders, Tottenham came close to forcing extra time.

Should Tim Sherwood not keep his job as Tottenham Head Coach beyond the end of this season, Southampton boss Mauricio Pochettino is likely to be among the front runners to replace him after a fine season on the South coast. Despite a late wobble in their last game, they saw off Norwich City 4-2 to move up to eighth, and they may even harbour ambitions of finishing above Manchester United.

Younes Kaboul could be fit enough to partner Jan Vertonghen at the back for Tottenham, while Mousa Dembele could also return.

Southampton are without midfield pair Jack Cork and Victor Wanyama. Another midfielder, Morgan Schneiderlin, is a major doubt with a muscle injury.
