David Beckham has unveiled plans for a 25,000 capacity stadium in Miami as the base for his new Major League Soccer team, BBC Sport has reported.

Earlier in the year, Beckham announced his intention to begin an MLS franchise in Florida, having retired as a player in May 2013 after spending six years playing in the United States with Los Angeles Galaxy. He hopes to have a team playing by 2016.

The proposed site is on Miami’s waterfront, and it would lie next to the city’s main basketball arena. However, should the these plans fall through, Beckham’s investor group have pinpointed other possible venues, including one next to Miami International Airport.

Beckham, 38, who also played for European giants Manchester United, Real Madrid, Milan and Paris St. Germain, was positive about the stadium plans. He said: "When people think of Miami, they immediately think about being near or on the water.

"So far, everything is very positive. There'll be criticism. There'll be certain things that come up, but we're ready to handle everything that'll be thrown at us.

"The important part for us is getting everybody on side, getting everybody to realise why we want to bring the team here, and why we want to have the stadium in a certain place."
