Man Utd vs Man City – Premier League best and worst
All eyes will be on Old Trafford on Tuesday for another Manchester derby, for a fixture which has thrown up plenty of entertainment since City were taken over by Sheikh Mansour in 2008:
Man Utd were coasting to the Premier League title, but the visitors earned some bragging rights with a victory, earned thanks to Sergio Aguero’s superb solo goal. The Argentine fired high into the top corner from the edge of the penalty area after a Vincent Kompany own goal had cancelled out James Milner’s opener for Man City, who ended up 11 points behind their rivals in second.
Wayne Rooney scored a cracker at West Ham United on Saturday, but it arguably was not as good as his 20-yard bicycle kick which won the derby in February 2011. The goal lit up a match which was often lacking in serious entertainment, and proved to be the winner for United, who had earlier taken the lead when Nani coverted Ryan Giggs’ excellent pass, before City equalised in fortunate circumstances.
Most Emphatic Victory
Nobody associated with Man City will ever forget their 6-1 thrashing of their neighbours at Old Trafford in October 2011. Mario Balotelli scored the first two with assured finishes, while Edin Dzeko also grabbed a brace. Sergio Aguero and David Silva were City’s other scorers, while Darren Fletcher struck from long range for a United side who were reduced to 10 men when Jonathan Evans was dismissed for a professional foul.
Most Dramatic Finish
Michael Owen’s finest moment in a Man Utd shirt was scoring the winner in a thrilling derby in September 2009, with the final kick of the game. Man City were left crestfallen after Gareth Barry and the outstanding Craig Bellamy had looked to have secured them a well-deserved point, but Owen converted from another Ryan Giggs pass to spark delirious scenes among the home fans.
