Newcastle vs Everton – Premier League preview and team news

By Stephen Donovan

Tuesday 25 March 2014

Everton will be looking to continue their strong run and continue their bid for a top four finish with a win away to Newcastle United.

John Carver will again be overseeing things from the dugout for Newcastle, having so far managed a win and a defeat during manager Alan Pardew’s stadium ban. Their pressure on Saturday eventually told as Papiss Cisse found a way past Crystal Palace goalkeeper with a late header. That made it three wins in four Premier League games, so the Magpies’ season is not merely petering out.

The visitors are in form themselves, winning each of their last three league outings, although not as convincingly as they were during the first half of the season. Two goals in a five minute spell proved enough to see off Swansea City 3-2 on Saturday in a hard-fought encounter, and the result has given them renewed belief for Champions League qualification, as they have a game in hand of faltering fourth place side Arsenal.

Newcastle continue to be hampered by the absence of Mathieu Debuchy and top scorer Loic Remy, but Hatem Ben Arfa could be recalled after making a telling contribution against Crystal Palace.

Steven Pienaar will be out for a few more weeks for Everton, as will Bryan Oviedo, but Phil Jagielka could return from a hamstring injury.
