Everton manager Roberto Martinez has tipped midfielder Ross Barkley for a place in Roy Hodgson’s 23-man England squad for this summer’s World Cup, writes BBC Sport.

Ross Barkley

The Spaniard’s comments come after Barkley was instrumental in his side’s 3-0 win away to Newcastle United on Tuesday, with the 20-year-old scored the opening goal. Picking the ball up from just inside his own half, he went on a solo run into the penalty area on shot high into the net past Tim Krul.

Romelu Lukaku and Leon Osman added further goals in a classy Everton performance, but afterwards Martinez reserved his praise for Barkley. He said: "All I can say is Ross is ready to help the national team, and nothing will faze him. He would be very proud to represent England.

"I know that Ross Barkley will be a phenomenal footballer for England. But the timing has to be measured by the England manager. We all have to respect that. If the national team manager believes he needs Ross, he will be ready; if not, he will have a good summer.

"He needs to regenerate and recover after what has been his best and most demanding season as a professional."

Barkley has already been handed three England caps by Hodgson, the first of which coming in Ukraine back in September in a World Cup qualifier. This is his first full season playing in the Everton first-team, and he has scored seven goals in 31 appearances.
