Liverpool vs Sunderland - Premier League preview and team news

By Stephen Donovan

Wednesday 26 March 2014

A win for Liverpool against relegation-haunted Sunderland will see them move to within just a point of leaders Chelsea in this most intriguing of Premier League title races.

The free-scoring football which has come to be expected under Brendan Rodgers was once again on display at Cardiff City on Saturday, with a Luis Suarez hat-trick and incisive attacking football helping them to victory in a nine-goal thriller. Matters at the back remain a concern, however, with three goals conceded in South Wales, where Daniel Agger and Martin Skrtel were often left very exposed.

Anything but a Liverpool win would be a major shock here, but Sunderland desperately need the points. Gustavo Poyet was riled by a terrible performance in a crucial clash with Norwich City on Saturday, and the Uruguayan will know that his side’s fate will most likely lie at the Stadium of Light, where they still have to face West Ham United, Everton, Cardiff City, West Bromwich Albion and Swansea City.

Liverpool are still without Jose Enrique, but could give starts to Lucas Leiva and Mamadou Sakho, who have both recently returned from injury.

Connor Wickham could play a part for Sunderland after being recalled from a loan spell at Leeds United, but goalkeeper Kieren Westwood remains sidelined.
