Fellaini: I didn't elbow Zabaleta

Manchester United’s Marouane Fellaini has denied elbowing Manchester City’s Pablo Zabaleta in Tuesday’s Manchester derby, ESPN has reported, with the Belgian saying Zabaleta’s jaw ‘bounced off’ his elbow.

Fellaini was shown a yellow card for the incident but Zabaleta said after the match that he felt the former Everton midfielder should have been sent off. Fellaini however denies purposely elbowing the Argentine.

“I don’t know [if I should have been sent off] but I didn’t do it on purpose,” Fellaini said. “I put my arm up to try and protect possession of the ball, and Zabaleta bounced [his jaw] against it. He was unlucky to make contact.

“The movement by me was not in an aggressive manner. It was a defensive move to protect the ball.”

United manager David Moyes said at his post-match Press conference that at the time he was surprised referee Michael Oliver even gave a free-kick. Because Oliver did see the altercation and took Fellaini’s name, there can be no further action from the FA.

City won the game 3-0 through an Edin Dzeko brace and a late Yaya Toure third to move 15 points clear of the Premier League champions.
