Southampton vs Newcastle - Premier League preview and team news

Friday 28 March 2014

Southampton play host to Newcastle United in a game between two sides scrapping for position in the top half of the Premier League.

The home side are currently just a point behind eighth-placed Newcastle with a superior goal difference, meaning they would be ahead of their opponents had they managed to hold on at Tottenham last time out. Dominating the game and appearing high on confidence, the Saints looked to be sailing to victory until a mistake allowed Christian Eriksen to pull one back, giving Spurs the momentum to launch their comeback.

Alan Pardew’s three-match stadium ban is over, meaning that he will now take in the next four Premier League games from the stands. Assistant boss John Carver presided over a win and two defeats in his absence, with the Magpies totally outplayed by Everton in the last of those on Wednesday. Whatever happens between now and the end of the season, the Tynesiders have had a decent year.

Nathaniel Clyne and Kelvin Davis are both out for Southampton, who have slight doubts over Steven Davis, Morgan Schneiderlin, Victor Wanyama and Jay Rodriguez.

Newcastle are still without top scorer Loic Remy and Mathieu Debuchy, Goalkeeper Tim Krul is also absent so Rob Elliot should take his place.
