Premier League betting preview - Man City good value over Arsenal, Liverpool to continue run

By James McLean

Saturday 29 March 2014

This weekend’s Premier League action kicks off at 12.45pm on Saturday afternoon when Aston Villa visit a Man United side low on confidence at the moment, and the action continues until Monday evening when Sunderland welcome West Ham to the Stadium of Light.

The best place to start is at the beginning, and so first off is the Man United vs Aston Villa clash Saturday lunchtime, and while Man United may be at something of a low ebb domestically this season advancement in the Champions League will give the fans something to smile about, and United will be favourites in this one.

Their loss at home to rivals Man City will have been a disappointment to most involved with the club, but this result could well spur on something of a backlash from David Moyes and co., though Villa are not likely to feel more confident heading to Old Trafford at any other time. That said, Bet365 have a home win at 9/20, so the champions are heavily fancied here.

Speaking of City, they face another tough trip when they travel to the home of title rivals Arsenal in one of the 3pm kickoffs, but the blue half of Manchester will still be on cloud nine after their impressive display at Old Trafford. Paddy Power have City at 11/10 to take the points despite being away at Arsenal, and the Gunners are 14/5 with Bet365. Tough game to call, and the draw seems like the most unlikely result – it could go either way, but with City riding a lightning bolt at the moment go for an away win in this one.

In a more midtable affair, Southampton welcome former manager Alan Pardew’s current side Newcastle to St. Mary’s, with Saints heavily fancied to pick up the win. Bet365 are 3/4 that the hosts will dish out Newcastle’s third loss in four games, though Bet Victor are offering 9/2 on a Geordie triumph – tempting considering their position one up from Southampton in the league, though a home win would allow Mauricio Pochettino’s men to leapfrog their counterparts, so a home win may be a good bet. Incidentally, the draw is 14/5, again with Bet365, and this should offer some really nice value.

Stoke face Hull in another midtable clash, with each side knowing that this is an opportunity to grab some vital points to continue their slow but steady charge away from danger. It seems absurd to consider 10th place still not out of the woods at this stage of the season, and while it is true that Stoke are 12 points clear of the drop spots 18th placed Sunderland have two games in hand over them, and so every point remains vital for any sides 10th or lower. William Hill have Stoke at 5/4, and with Hull’s best bet being 14/5 at Bet365 the home win certainly seems much more likely here.

There are two games on Sunday afternoon, but the bigger is arguably Liverpool taking on Tottenham in a big match between two teams harbouring serious European aspirations. William Hill have got Brendan Rodgers’ men at 1/2 to see off Spurs, but Bet365 offer 4/1 on the draw and 13/2 on a Tottenham win. Ultimately Liverpool’s fine recent form is giving them sincere confidence, and they will be hoping to make it eight wins on the bounce here.
