Lambert delighted by Southampton performance
Southampton striker Rickie Lambert was left to hail his side’s ‘best performance of the season’, after helped them to a 4-0 win over Newcastle United, Sky Sports has reported.
After Jay Rodriguez had missed two fine opportunities to put the Saints in front, Lambert set up the former Burnley striker to tuck home a deserved opening goal on the stroke of half time, before getting on the score-sheet himself with an emphatic finish into the roof of the net early in the second period.
Adam Lallana capped another impressive performance with a superb strike to make it three, and Rodriguez completed the rout with his 15th goal of the season to ensure that Southampton leapfrogged their visitors, who failed to create any clear-cut opportunities.
On his side’s display, Lambert said: "I think that's probably our best performance this season. We can't stop smiling. I think everyone agrees today that, to a man, we were superb. It was a great performance. I don't think there was anything different about today, it was just that we hit it off straight away.
"It was a little bit panicky because we had five or six chances that we didn't take, so we were a little bit worried, but we knew that we would get one and when we got that we should be able to play our football. I thought we were superb.
"We know that we're capable of that, we see it every day in training with the players that we've got. It's a pleasure to play with them day in, day out and it's good to get the rewards."
