Man Utd vs Bayern Munich - Match preview and team news

Manchester United’s reward for their second round comeback against Olympiakos is a tie with European champions Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals, with the first leg on Tuesday at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils showed great spirit to overturn the 2-0 first-leg deficit, with Robin van Persie’s hat-trick seeing off the Greeks. However, they are without the Dutchman for this toughest of tests, and that makes their task all the more difficult with United hoping to take a lead into the second leg at the Allianz Arena.

David Moyes’ team do at least come into this one off the back of a convincing win against Aston Villa on Saturday, a game where Juan Mata was able to flourish in the role behind lone striker Wayne Rooney, who netted twice in another impressive display. The defence is the main issue though, particularly as the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City have both had it all their own way at Man Utd in recent weeks.

Bayern Munich have already clinched the Bundesliga in what was effectively a one-horse race right from the very beginning of the season, so now they can turn their full attention on to retaining their Champions League crown. Josep Guardiola has made them even better than they were under Jupp Heynckes, which is a frightening prospect for the hosts.

Besides van Persie, Man Utd are without defender Patrice Evra while Alexander Buttner and Rafael da Silva are both doubts with hamstring problems.

The visitors are without midfielder Thiago Alcantara, but they have several options to fill his position, including Javi Martinez and Xheridan Shaqiri.
