Young: Man Utd have great chance in Munich

Ashley Young believes Manchester United should be positive about the prospect of qualifying for the Champions League semi-finals after their first-leg draw with Bayern Munich, ITV Sport has reported.

Man Utd players celebrating Nemanja Vidic’s goal

Nemanja Vidic gave United the lead in the encounter on Tuesday but Bastian Schweinsteiger equalised shortly after. But Schweinsteiger was later sent off for a second yellow card and will miss the return leg, while Bayern will also be without Javi Martinez through suspension.

Young believes the loss of the pair combined with the result at Old Trafford means United can eliminate the holders. “I can't wait to go to Munich. We have given ourselves a massive chance,” the winger said.

“I think everyone would have taken that result before a ball was kicked. It sets us up nicely for the second leg. It was a great team performance and we look forward to the second leg now.

“Everybody wrote us off before the game but we created many chances. We know they are a good team but we knew we would get chances on the counter attack. We managed to do that and got the goal.

“Schweinsteiger is going to be a miss for them. Martinez will be as well. But we have to concentrate on ourselves and put on a performance.”

United are currently seventh in the Premier League whereas Bayern have already claimed victory in the Bundesliga, lifting the trophy with six games to play. They have a 23-point lead over second placed Borussia Dortmund.
