Rooney: I had to avoid studs-up tackle

Wayne Rooney has said he went down under a challenge from Bayern Munich’s Bastian Schweinsteiger to make sure he wasn’t hurt, ESPN has reported.

Bastian Schweinsteiger challenges Wayne Rooney

Schweinsteiger was shown a second yellow card for the tackle and will miss the second-leg of the Champions League game against Manchester United. The first-leg finished 1-1 and Schweinsteiger scored for his side, equalising after Nemanja Vidic opened the scoring.

Rooney confirmed Schweinsteiger made a comment before he left the field and while he was reluctant to repeat the German’s words, he insisted he had to avoid the tackle. “I don't really want to say what he said but I think it's a foul,” Rooney said.

“If I didn't get out of the way he could have hurt me, he's gone in with his studs and the referee has booked him, so it's not my decision.

“It's not nice to see anyone get sent off. I didn't try and get him sent off, the referee has made the decision. I have tried to stop myself from getting hurt and the referee has had a decision to make.”

Bayern Coach Pep Guardiola made a gesture to imply Rooney had dived to get his player sent off and will also have to be without Javi Martinez for the return leg, after the Spain international received a yellow card and is suspended through the totting up process.
