Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero will not be rushed back into action and will be saved for his side’s title clash against Liverpool, according to Sky Sports.

The Argentine has been out for the past four games with a hamstring injury but has returned to training after previously being considered for a return this weekend.

Despite a possible earlier return date, Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini has said that he wishes to keep his top scorer in reserve and save him for the vital match up at Anfield.

"Sergio is okay. He has worked just now with the squad but he just started on Thursday, so he needs more work to be 100 per cent fit," said Pellegrini.

"He is not in the squad but he doesn't have any problems with his injury.

"For this week it is too soon for him to start playing because he just worked two days, but next week against Liverpool he will not have any problems."

City are currently in third place and four points behind table toppers Liverpool, but they still hold the advantage of having two games in hand over their title rivals.

Whilst Aguero will not be ready for the team’s home match against Southampton this weekend, Pellegrini has insisted that all of his focus is on his side’s league campaign, starting with the Saints’ visit.

"We are just thinking about this match we have to play against Southampton," added the Chilean.

"All the other things - you are always talking and thinking and working - but in this moment it is not the most important thing."
