Lambert: points tally the only focus for Saints
Southampton striker Rickie Lambert has claimed that the only focus for his side is to improve their point’s total despite being able to deal Manchester City a title blow, according to Sky Sports.
The Saints face title chasers Manchester City on Saturday and victory for Lambert’s side would give Liverpool space at the top of the table.
Despite the 32-year-old forward being a boyhood Red’s player, he has insisted that Southampton is the only team on his mind for the rest of the season.
"For me my first, second, third and fourth priority is to do well for Southampton - that's all that matters," said Lambert.
"As a group of players we have never been this far up. We want to finish as high as possible - every position counts.
"It means everything to us - we're absolutely made up with the season we are having and there's a possibility it can get even better."
Lambert has put in many fine performances so far this season, and his form has tipped him for a place in Roy Hodgson’s World Cup squad.
The forward also admitted that a trip to Brazil in the summer would be a welcome addition to an already great season for him and his team.
"I would be lying if I said I don't think about the World Cup," Lambert added.
"There's a chance I can go.
"I'm trying not to think too much about it because it would put pressure on me but I know playing well will help. I am playing well at the moment but I want to keep my foot on the pedal and see what happens."
