Wenger bemoans loan system ahead of Everton clash

Arsene Wenger has called for the current loan system to be abolished or reformed, as Arsenal gear up for a crucial clash with an Everton side that have dipped into the loan market three times this season, reports the Daily Mail

Roberto Martinez signed trio Romelu Lukaku, Gerard Deulofeu and Gareth Barry on season long loan deals at the start of the season - and all three have played a major part in the Toffees push for a coverted Champions League spot.

And while Wenger himself has used the system - bringing in Swede Kim Kallstrom in January on a temporary basis, believes that it is time the rules were changed.

Wenger said: “It would be best if players are loaned only in lower divisions or abroad - and even abroad I'm not convinced it is right.”

Current Premier League rules state that a player is not allowed to be fielded against their parent club, and has seen Lukaku miss games against Everton while Barry was unavailable against Manchester City.

However the three have been pivotal to the clubs chase for fourth place when fit.

Wenger added: “We have to make players available against the teams that loan them out, or the system is not defendable.”
