Tottenham vs Sunderland - Premier League preview and team news

Bookmark and Share

By Stephen Donovan

Monday 07 April 2014

Gustavo Poyet returns to former club Tottenham with his Sunderland side bottom of the Premier League and in desperate need of a victory.

The hosts could do with a win themselves. Just a matter of weeks ago, the aim for Head Coach Tim Sherwood was to finish in the top four, but now Spurs are scrapping with Manchester United in a battle to finish sixth. The performance against Liverpool last time out was lacking in inspiration, so much so that Sherwood stayed in the stands throughout the entire match looking subdued.

Despite a brief upturn in form during January and February, Sunderland have spent most of the season in the bottom three and now find themselves propping up the rest of the Premier League once again. Defeat against West Ham United in their previous game was a result they could not afford, and the anxiety from the supporters transmitted its way on to the pitch as the Black Cats tried in vain to grab an equaliser.

Tottenham should have Emmanuel Adebayor back available, with the Togolese striker set to come in for Roberto Soldado, who is injured. Jan Vertonghen is also out but Vlad Chiriches and Paulinho are back in contention.

Adam Johnson, who scored after coming off the bench against West Ham, is likely to earn a recall with Steven Fletcher and Kieren Westwood still out for Sunderland.
