Wenger expects fight for the top four

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has admitted that his sides Champions League place is now under threat after their 3-0 defeat at the hands of fifth placed Everton, the BBC has reported.

The Gunners were under whelming in their defeat on Merseyside and the slip up has seen the Toffees close to within one point of their direct rivals - also holding a game in hand upon them.

Wenger said: “I'm 100% determined to fight to make the top four but it will be difficult.

"We have a run-in that is feasible but we must focus on the quality of our displays before dreaming of places.”

While the Frenchman has overseen an impressive 16 consecutive top four finishes for his side, they cannot hide from their current poor form as they slide down the table.

Since their 5-1 mauling to title rivals Liverpool back in February when they were just one point from top spot, they have claimed just nine points from an available 24, fallen away from the title race and now sit precariously in fourth place.

And Everton’s first win over the Gunners in 15 attempts has seen them take a commanding position as the race for fourth heats up - although the Merseyside club face the more difficult run in.

What will also be a cause for concern is the number of heavy defeats suffered this season - the aforementioned Liverpool result, a 6-0 drubbing away to Chelsea and 6-3 thriller away to Manchester City - alongside a shock defeat to Stoke and disappointing draw at home to Swansea.
