Sunderland manager Gus Poyet has revealed he explained to John O'Shea why he was left out of the team to play Tottenham Hotspur, Sky Sports has reported.

The Black Cats lost 5-1 in the absence of the skipper and Poyet has said that while he doesn’t make a habit of explaining to players why they’re not in the starting XI, he did in this case out of respect for the former Manchester United defender.

“Because of the type of person he is, and the type of professional he is, he deserved an explanation,” Poyet said. “I don't do that every week.

“Every time I make a change, I don't call the player to tell him, believe me,” the Uruguayan continued. “I've got no problem telling him if he wants to know, but I can't call a player in every time I make a change. But John deserved an explanation because of who he is, and how we need him.”

Poyet didn’t give his reasons publically but insisted they were valid, adding that he had put a great deal of thought into the team to play Spurs. “People think I woke up in the morning, had a dream and thought I'd change John, and replace him with Carlos Cuellar,” Poyet said.

“But it's not like that. There are reasons, there are different games. It's not just a reaction. Then after the game, you realise whether you were right or wrong. I think Carlos did well, and was probably the best of the three defenders.”

The defeat has left Sunderland bottom of the table with 25 points from 31 games. Should the Wearsiders win their two games in hand they would move to 18th, still in the bottom three but only a point short of Fulham. They next host Everton on Saturday.
