Southampton vs Cardiff - Premier League preview and team news

Cardiff City travel to Southampton on Saturday aiming to keep their faint survival chances alive with a much-needed victory.

The hosts have a very good home record, picking up maximum points in emphatic fashion against Newcastle United in their last game on home turf. Since then, they have lost top scorer Jay Rodriguez to a serious ligament injury, and slipped to a 4-1 defeat at Manchester City, despite dominating possession and territory for long periods of the first half, but in eighth place, they can be delighted with their season.

The same cannot be said for Cardiff, who were successfully keeping their heads above water before Christmas, but have now plummeted to second-from-bottom with survival now beginning to look a very unlikely prospect. Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has not had the desired impact, taking just eight points from 13 league games, and his decision to go for all-out attack against Crystal Palace totally backfired.

Gaston Ramirez or James Ward-Prowse could come in for Southampton in place of the injured Rodriguez. Artur Boruc could return in goal, but Maya Yoshida could miss the rest of the season.

The visitors are still without defender Mark Hudson, while winger Craig Noone has picked up a season-ending abdominal injury and also misses out.
