Arsenal midfielder Mikel Arteta has said that his side’s win on penalties against Wigan Athletic in Saturday’s FA Cup semi-final will give them the confidence to finish the season strongly and make the top four, Sky Sports is reporting.

Since early February, Arsenal have slumped from the top of the Premier League to fifth place, with their place in next season’s Champions League now under serious doubt thanks to Everton’s seven-match winning run.

The series of poor results came to an end with a penalty shootout victory over the FA Cup holders on Saturday, despite producing a below-par performance for most of the game. The Gunners now have five Premier League games to overhaul Everton and finish in fourth place, and Arteta hopes that Saturday’s dramatic win can give them the momentum to end the season well.

He said: "It is about confidence and this win builds a bit of enthusiasm. It gives us something to look forward to at the end of the season. But on Tuesday there is another massive game coming up.

"We will have to see what we have available because we lost a few players as well. Let's see what we have got, prepare for the game the best way we can because West Ham will be tough opponents again."
