Martinez: Moyes will get good Everton reception

Everton manager Roberto Martinez believes his predecessor David Moyes will get a positive reception when he returns to Goodison Park with Manchester United on Sunday, BBC Sport has reported.

Moyes left Goodison for Old Trafford last summer to replace the retiring Sir Alex Ferguson and was given an emotional send-off following his last home game in charge, having managed the Toffees for 11 years.

But relations between Moyes and his former employers soured when Moyes attempted to sign Marouane Fellaini and Leighton Baines in a joint move. The approach was dismissed by Everton as ‘derisory and insulting.’ Fellaini later completed a move to United but Baines has remained at Everton under Martinez.

Everton beat United 1-0 at Old Trafford in December and Moyes was not greeted warmly by the visiting fans, but Martinez expects Goodison to welcome Moyes back in a more hospitable manner.

“His job at Everton deserves that - his work has been terrific,” Martinez said of the Scot. “We are a club full of integrity and style, we are a proper football club, so we will show the respect to David Moyes and what he's done at our football club.

“We all know he's the Manchester United manager now and I'm sure that reception will be very much different, but every Evertonian has got great memories of the job that he did.”

Everton go into the game in fifth place following Wednesday’s home defeat to Crystal Palace. United are seventh, nine points adrift of their hosts and a home win would extend the gap to 12 points, ensuring that with three games to go Everton would finish higher than the current Premier League champions.
