‘Electrifying’ Everton delight Martinez
Everton manager Roberto Martinez has told of his delight after his side completed the league double over Manchester United with a 2-0 victory at Goodison Park on Sunday, BBC Sport has reported.
Both goals from the home side were scored in the first half, with Leighton Baines netting the first from the penalty spot after Phil Jones had handled, before Kevin Mirallas fired home an angled shot. Everton threatened further goals after the break as they limited the Premier League champions to very few chances.
The result lifted Everton back to within one point of Arsenal in the race to finish in the top four, and Martinez, describing some of his team’s play as ‘electrifying’, was ecstatic with the performance. He said: "I couldn't be prouder to do the double over Manchester United. It is something for the fans to enjoy and be proud of the team.
"It was an outstanding result. It was the first time we have done the double over Manchester United since 1969, so that tells you how pleasing the scoreline is.’
On Everton’s top four chances, Martinez added: "You never expect Arsenal to drop points easily. We are just looking at ourselves and how many points we can achieve. Sixty-nine points is an incredible figure and we want to try to perform as well as we can to extend that figure to the maximum we can achieve."
