Carroll not fully fit, admits West Ham boss Allardyce

West Ham United manager Sam Allardyce has admitted that striker Andy Carroll may take some time to return to full match fitness, Sky Sports has reported.

Andy Carroll

The former Newcastle United and Liverpool player was injured back in August and did not return until January. He has started every Premier League game he has been available for since the beginning of February, but has only scored twice, and Allardyce has been forced to concede that Carroll is not fully-fit.

He said: "He's not 100 per cent. He's had no pre-season at all. He's worked very hard, but getting into games at this stage of the season after so long out is hard.

"It's hard to get that ultimate sharpness that you need. Hopefully he can find it. He looked sharp when he came back. His enthusiasm and the energy from being so pleased to be back with us carried him through, but that catches up with you when you've been out for so long.

"A little bit of fatigue kicks in. We've got to work through it and hopefully he can finish the season by scoring a few goals for us."

Allardyce’s words may come as a blow to England manager Roy Hodgson, who might be considering Carroll for a place in his World Cup squad, which he names in May.
