Wenger believes Diaby could play part in Arsenal's season run-in

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes Abou Diaby could still have a part to play in the Gunners’ season run-in, according to Arsenal.com.

Abou Diaby

The 27-year-old, who has won 16 caps for his native France, could be set to feature for the Arsenal U-21 squad in the clash with Chelsea U-21, and Wenger believes the midfielder could yet make his return to the senior squad by the end of the season.

Speaking to Arsenal Player, Wenger said: “He is back in full training now and available to play. He might play a part of the game for the under-21s.

“Yes of course [he could play for the first team this season], it depends how well he comes out of the game. He hasn't played for a year but physically he is ready to play, completely. It is now just decision-making, getting used to challenges again. He needs a game.

“Everybody [counted him out] but he is fit and ready.”

Diaby has not featured for the Emirates outfit since he started in a match against Swansea in January 2013.

He started his career at Auxerre, where he signed his first professional contract in 2004 before moving to north London two years later for an undisclosed fee, which was later revealed to be £2m.

Arsenal face a battle for Champions League football next season. Looking like title contenders earlier in the season, they sit 10 points behind leaders Liverpool, and only a single point ahead of the leaders’ Merseyside rivals Everton with three games remaining.

Those remaining games kick off when Newcastle arrive at the Emirates on Monday evening, with a home game against West Brom and then a journey to Norwich rounding off their league campaign.

A four point deficit behind fellow former champions Man City, who have a game in hand, will make it difficult for the Gunners to finish in the top three, and so fourth would appear to be their primary target in the league.
