Sagbo fined in relation to Quenelle gesture

Hull City striker Yannick Sagbo has been fined by the FA after he was found guilty of a charge relating to the now infamous Nicolas Analka quenelle gesture, BBC Sport is reporting.

The 26-year-old had previously issued a message of support for the Frenchman, who was heavily criticised for the celebration after scoring against West Ham back in December, and has now been fined £15,000.

Anelka was subsequently charged by the FA and ultimately banned for five games, fined £80,000 and eventually sacked by West Brom, who also saw club sponsors Zoopla end their deal prematurely over the incident.

Sagbo admitted the charge brought to him by the FA and has also been warned over his future conduct while attending a compulsory educational course.

A statement from the FA read: “The charge was that the comment was abusive and/or indecent and/or insulting and/or improper, contrary to Rule E3(1).

"Further to that, The FA considered the comment to be an aggravated breach, as defined in FA Rule E3[2], in that it included a reference to ethnic origin and/or race and/or religion or belief.”

The quenelle has previously been described as an inverted Nazi salute by many - and while French comedian Diedonne M’bala M’bala devised gesture as an apparent anti-establishment symbol, it has strong anti-Sematic connotations.
