Mertesacker backs Ozil for better second season at Arsenal

Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker has backed fellow German international Mesut Ozil for success at the Gunners, as long as the former Real Madrid man is able to establish more consistency next season, write Sky Sports.

Mesut Ozil & Per Mertesacker

Arsenal’s record signing, who joined before the start of the 2013/14 season from the Spanish giants, was instrumental during the earlier stages of the season as the Emirates club looked set for a realistic title challenge, but inconsistent form and injuries have hampered his influence on the field during the latter stages.

Mertesacker, who could be seen lambasting Ozil following his side’s heavy loss at Man City when Ozil failed to applaud the travelling fans, believes the 25-year-old can prove to be worth every penny of his reported £42.5m transfer fee.

Mertesacker acknowledged the differences in playing styles between leagues in different nations, but stated that if Ozil does need to concentrate on maintaining consistency.

“He has adapted well but there is more to come from him," he said. "And I think the second season will be much better from him, because he's a fantastic player. He has shown some great skills but he needs to be more consistent, and that's what makes the difference at the end.

“I think if you realise quick what it needs, if you are intelligent enough, and he's an intelligent footballer, and I think he will sort that problem out. It's similar to myself, when I got my injury in the second part of the season, and afterwards I came back even stronger, because then I realised what is at stake.

Mertesacker concluded his analysis by reiterating his belief that the Gunners fans will see plenty more from the Germany international in north London. He said: “And I think for him it's good to get a little rest now, to be ready maybe for the last few games for us, the World Cup, and then another season. With a pre-season ahead of him, there's more to come from him.”
