West Ham manager Sam Allardyce has admitted the club should have done better this season, ITV Sport has reported.

The Hammers boss has said this campaign compares unfavourably with last season, when he felt they exceeded expectations. “Last season was an over achievement and I think this season has been an underachievement up to now,” Allardyce said.

“There are certain circumstance as to why that has been the case and they have all been documented,” he added. “The players and I are always learning and always know that we have to try to develop the team and move onto the next level. To change, but not change too much.

“You have to get value for money and quality players that are better than you have already got, that is just the process of this business if you want to improve and get better.”

West Ham are currently 12th in the Premier League table, seven points clear of the bottom three with three games to play, but without a win in their last three outings. West Brom are the opposition this weekend and Allardyce believes another win will guarantee safety, if it isn’t already achieved.

“We have always had the 40-point mark on our mind to be absolutely certain and probably 38,” he said. “You never know, after the weekend it might be enough.”
