Southampton vs Everton - Premier League preview and team news

Champions League hopefuls Everton will be aiming to move back up into fourth place by winning a tricky game at Southampton on Saturday.

It was in this corresponding fixture last season that Mauricio Pochettino began his Southampton reign, and in the 15 months since he has made immense progress. They are now well placed to equal their best ever Premier League finish of eighth, but Pochettino will have been frustrated at only taking one point from games against Cardiff City and Aston Villa, mainly due to wasteful finishing.

Everton came back strongly after their surprise home defeat to Crystal Palace, with their effective counter-attacking football proving too good for a poor Manchester United, a game which highlighted the positivity that manager Roberto Martinez has spread around Goodison Park. If they want Champions League football, however, they must win three tough games, and hope Arsenal slip up in at least one of theirs.

Kelvin Davis, Jay Rodriguez and Maya Yoshida are sidelined for Southampton while Gaston Ramirez is also rated as a doubt. The Saints could also hand a start to youngster Sam Gallagher.

The visitors will be without Kevin Mirallas for the rest of the season with a groin injury sustained against Man Utd. Sylvain Distin was also injured in that match, and is still out.
