Whittingham labels Cardiff's trip to Sunderland as bigger than a cup final
Cardiff midfielder Peter Whittingham has labelled the Bluebirds’ clash with fellow relegation-threatened side Sunderland as “as big as FA Cup, Carling Cup and play-off finals,” reports Wales Online.
Whittingham’s return to the Cardiff first team has coincided with his side’s win at Southampton and draw at Stoke, and the former Aston Villa midfielder believes that the trip to bottom club Sunderland is as big as it gets, and remains confident that the supporters can spur the players on.
“It's probably one of the biggest games along with the cup finals and the play-off finals. It's right up there with those sort of games. It's always going to be a huge game when you know you have to win,” said the 29-year-old.
“The atmosphere will no doubt be brilliant and the Cardiff fans will be awesome. They have done well in the last two games and picked up points no-one thought they would have, but we've been doing really well.
“Our last couple of performances have been really good. We felt like we could have won last Saturday and if we could have won two in a row, everyone would have been talking about us again. It's about us on Sunday. I think if we play well, to our strengths and how we have been lately we'll be okay.”
Cardiff sit 18th, with hosts Sunderland bottom, and a win for either club could well see them climb out of the relegation zone with just two games to go in Cardiff’s case, or three for the Black Cats.
Whittingham joined Cardiff from Villa in 2007 and has gone on to make almost 300 appearances for the Welsh outfit. The midfielder believes that survival is not out of the question until it is impossible: “We will just carry on until it's mathematically impossible that we can't stay up. We have to do that. It would be horrible to lose. It's not something we're thinking about,” he continued.
When asked about a target to hit for survival, he said: “Who knows? Other teams are playing and we will get a better picture then. Two wins out of three would be huge for us.”
