Sunderland vs Cardiff - Premier League preview and team news

Sunday 27 April 2014

The Premier League’s bottom two clubs, Sunderland and Cardiff City, meet at the Stadium of Light on Sunday for a game that neither can afford to lose.

Sunderland come into this match with plenty of newfound belief, having sensationally ended Jose Mourinho’s unbeaten Premier League record at Stamford Bridge thanks to Fabio Borini’s penalty. That came after they came within minutes of beating Manchester City. Those performances have left people wondering how they can be lying bottom, but this is the type of game the Black Cats have struggled to win all season.

After appearing certain to go down following a heavy home defeat by Crystal Palace, Cardiff have also shown signs of life over their last two games, but still seem to lack the quality in attacking areas that they will need in order to stay up. If this one ends in a draw, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be the happier manager, but the Norwegian knows that a win will give the plenty of momentum going into their final two games.

In-form striker Connor Wickham could miss out for Sunderland after picking up a knock late on at Chelsea. Kieren Westwood, Steven Fletcher and Ki Sung-Yueng are definitely out.

Cardiff striker Craig Bellamy missed the last game through illness, but should return here, although Mark Hudson remains out with a hamstring injury.
