Williams: Monk deserves Swansea job

Swansea captain Ashley Williams believes current boss Gary Monk deserves the role on a permanent basis, BBC

Sport has reported.

Monk was given the temporary position in February after Michael Laudrup was sacked, and has since guided the Swans to Premier League survival.

Speaking after the 4-1 win at home to Aston Villa, defender Williams says that Monk should be given the position.

He said: "For me he is, but it's not me that makes the decision. I said after the first week he should be given a chance, and I still stand by that.

"I think he's done really good work. He works ever so hard, training is good, we enjoy the meetings that he puts on and the way he sets up on match day and I believe that he deserves the job.”

The victory over Villa moved Swansea eight points clear of the relegation zone ensuring the Welsh side will play in the top flight again next season.

Swansea took the lead through Wilfried Bony but were pegged back moments later thanks to a close range finish from Gabby Agbonlahor.

The home side regained the lead though through a fine long range effort from Jonjo Shelvey, before Pablo Hernandez added a third through curling finish. A late penalty from Bony made it four.

Defeat for Villa means they now sit three points clear of the relegation zone with three games left to play at home to Hull before two away trips to Manchester City and then Tottenham Hotspur on the final day of the season.
