Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has said that he will continue playing beyond this season and that he hopes to stay at Old Trafford, BBC Sport has reported.

Due to Ferdinand’s lack of playing time this season, many believed that Ferdinand may choose to retire at the end of the campaign, particularly with his contract at Man Utd set to come to an end this summer.

However, the former England international revealed that he hopes to extend his playing career, saying: "I'm going to continue playing. Whether it's here, I don't know. But I hope so."

Ferdinand also spoke of his frustration at the lack of first-team action he has been given the season, with the recently dismissed David Moyes often preferring Nemanja Vidic, Jonathan Evans and Chris Smalling to play in central defence. He added: "That's part and parcel of the game and you have to accept decisions that are made.

"Some managers play you, some don't. Managers have their personal preferences, but just as a whole and looking from a team perspective, we are not where we want to be and that's disappointing."

The 35-year-old Ferdinand has been a Man Utd player since 2002, and has won six Premier League titles, the FA Cup in 2004 and the Champions League in 2008.
