Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has denied an FA charge of misconduct relating to his comments which followed his side’s recent 2-1 home defeat to Sunderland, BBC Sport has reported.

The game, which took place on April 19, saw Chelsea lose to a late Fabio Borini penalty, and afterwards Mourinho offered his ‘congratulations’ to referee Mike Dean as well as Mike Riley, currently head of the Professional Games Match Officials Board.

He said: "Congratulations to Mike Riley, because he's the referees' boss. What they are doing during the whole season is fantastic, especially in the last couple of months, especially in matches involving the teams that were in the title race - it's absolutely fantastic."

In denying the charge, Mourinho has requested a non-personal hearing for his case to be heard, and should he be found guilty, he is likely to receive a fine and/or a touchline ban.

This is the second time in two months that the 51-year-old has been charged by the FA. On the previous occasion at Aston Villa, Mourinho lost his case on an incident which took place on the touchline.

Meanwhile, Chelsea assistant coach Rui Faria has accepted two counts of misconduct after trying to confront the officials against Sunderland.
