Everton have been handed a boost ahead of Saturday’s game against Manchester City with the news that left-back Leighton Baines is winning his race to be fit to start, the Liverpool Echo has reported.

Baines was taken off towards the end of Saturday’s 2-0 defeat away to Southampton after picking up a knock to his knee, but the club say that he is likely to be fit to face the title hopefuls after responding well to treatment.

An Everton statement read: “Leighton Baines is set to be fit for this weekend’s game against Manchester City. The England international was assessed over the weekend, but has reacted well to the problem, meaning he should be fit for Saturday’s crunch Goodison clash.”

The Toffees go into that game against Man City knowing that they must win to retain any chance of qualifying for next season’s Champions League, after Arsenal cruised to a 3-0 win over Newcastle United on Monday.

Baines, who is set to be England’s first-choice left-back for this summer’s World Cup barring injury, has made a total of 33 appearances for Everton this season, scoring six goals.
