Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has praised the spirit his side have demonstrated after they moved to within touching distance of another season of Champions League football with a 3-0 victory over Newcastle United, writes Sky Sports.

There were few chances early on at the Emirates Stadium as Arsenal looked to capitalise on Everton’s defeat to Southampton on Saturday, but the Gunners did take the lead on 26 minutes when Laurent Koscielny touched in from close range following a free-kick.

That breakthrough settled Arsenal and they were comfortable from then on, passing the ball with fluency and confidence. The second goal arrived just three minutes before half time when Mesut Ozil converted from six yards after Tim Krul had saved twice from Olivier Giroud.

For the third, which came midway through the second half, Ozil turned provider as he swung in a cross which Giroud glanced past Krul to complete a convincing win as the out-of-form visitors created little.

And after the game, Wenger was full of praise for his side, who are returning to form. He said: "We have gone through a difficult period, and Goodison Park was one of them.

I believe that the spirit in the side is healthy, strong, determined and you can see that when the team is capable of bouncing back after a big disappointment."

He also praised the performance of Ozil, adding: "What he has brought is fantastic technique, simplicity in his game, intelligence of passing. If you look at his numbers, his assists and his passes in the final third are very good. We want some more goals from him and I think that will come naturally."
