West Ham interested in Sunderland defender Bardsley

Tuesday 29 April 2014

West Ham are interested in Sunderland defender Phil Bardsley, according to The Sunderland Echo.

Phil Bardsley

Bardsley has proven one of the most popular figures at the Stadium of Light during his time in the north east, but is expected to leave the Black Cats in the summer regardless of whether or not the Wearsiders keep their top flight status.

That news has put the Hammers on alert, with boss Sam Allardyce keen to sign the former Man Utd youngster. Bardsley is out of contract in the summer, along with seven other Sunderland players, and is one of only two – alongside Jack Colback – to have been approached by the club in relation to a new contract, but the pair have both rejected any offers made to them thus far.

Bardsley holds the record for Sunderland appearances in the Premier League, and is thought to be happy at the club – but disagrees with the club’s policy regarding the length of contract on the table. Unless Sunderland shift that policy and adjust their offer, Bardsley looks set to leave, and the east Londoners are keen to add him to their ranks.

It is thought the Hammers would match Bardsley’s current salary, in the hopes of landing a player with plenty of top flight experience already under his belt. Should Sunderland change their stance and meet Bardsley’s preferences, however, it is thought the defender could yet remain on Wearside.

Other top flight clubs are also thought to be monitoring his situation, as well as newly promoted Burnley, and so where the 28-year-old will ply his trade next season seems to hinge on Sunderland’s determination to either stick with their existing offer, or keep their most experienced Premier League player.
