Everton are set to welcome back central defender Phil Jagielka for the home game with Manchester City this weekend, Everton's official website has revealed.

Speaking to the clubs’ TV channel, Toffee’s boss Roberto Martinez has revealed that the England defender should be back for the clash on Saturday evening.

He said: “Phil has done really well in his programme and has developed strength in his muscles. He looks completely regenerated and is desperate to be available.

“It will be a late call whether he is available or not but I would be surprised if he doesn’t make the squad for Saturday.”

Jagielka had missed the last eleven games for the side who were also without defender Sylvain Distin in the recent away defeat at Southampton.

The news comes in the same week that left-back Leighton Baines will also be in contention for a place in the squad on Saturday after the defender had played through a knee injury at St Mary’s.

With Baines and Jagielka set to make a return on Saturday, Martinez revealed that he will make a late decision on the fitness of Distin.

“Sylvain Distin again is pushing himself to be available. We need to carry on with the programme that he has and make sure that the treatment is bringing a good effect.

“I would say he is 50/50 for the weekend but now we have hope that we will see Sylvain before the seasons ends which is a fantastic bonus.”

With two games left to play Everton currently sit fifth in the league and require fourth placed Arsenal to drop points in their remaining games if they are to pip the Gunners to the final Champions League spot.

After hosting City on Saturday, the Toffees travel to Hull for their final game of the season.
