Veteran ‘keeper Mark Schwarzer is hoping that he can continue to play past the end of the current season, insisting he has no plans to hang up his gloves, report Sky Sports.

The Australian signed a 12 month deal with Chelsea after leaving Fulham as a free agent, and although he knew he would largely be filling a backup role to current number one Petr Cech hoped for opportunities.

A season ending injury to Cech has seen the 41-year-old thrust into the spot light both domestically and in Europe, and has applied himself in positive fashion.

While he has impressed there is currently no new deal on the table and will mean he will again become a free agent at the end of the season, but the Aussie is determined to carry his career into a remarkable 25th year.

Schwarzer said: “Hopefully, I can continue playing beyond this season. That is certainly the plan and I am still excited about the future.

“When you first break into football the big question is how long can you sustain it?

“At the right times in my career I was able to identify certain aspects of football that were very important in terms of longevity.

“I have been reasonably fortunate with regards to injury. But it's also down to a lot of work I do on and off the pitch.”

Schwarzer will line up for Chelsea on Wednesday in their crunch clash with Atletico Madrid, hopeful of gaining a place in the Champions League final.
